Nigerian Equities Market Update: Wednesday, 7th February, 2018

For the third consecutive trading days, equities trading on the floor of The Nigerian Stock Exchange ended in the red territory, as NSEASI rounded up at 43,538.16 from 43,877.30. The total lost points is 77Bpts. Safe NSE-Banking Index that gained, other observed market indices dipped. Week to Date market activities is down by 247Bpts while Month to Date loss build to 182Bpts. Value loss by the market capitalization of the listed equities during today’s trading activities was N121.699 billion, same as 77Bpts below the opening value.  Meanwhile, trading activities for the day produced 18 advancers and 40 lagers. NSEASI Year to Date gain is now 13.85% while the Market Capitalization Year to Date gain stood at N2.014 trillion same as 14.80% above the year’s opening value.

As can be seen from today’s trading activities, more traders are taking sides with the bearish investors as sellers seem to be getting keener to pathway with items in their respective trading baskets and buyers are smartly taking advantage of the situation to price down the equities.

As noted in our various reports, it is expected that investors re-shuffle portfolios in an attempt to position rightly for possible shocks during the earnings season. Recall that, January 2018 trend is exceptional when compare to normal trends in the past four Januaries. Thus, investors are expected to be cautious and more sensitive; all market news and fundamentals should not only be well analyzed, but general reactions to such should also be confirmed through technical analysis tools.

Investments should therefore be based on the possibility of equities releasing improve figures and pay cash or scrip dividend. Please understand that the possibilities of low dividend yields are on the high side, especially now that most equities are trading above their respective book values. Safe Trade.
