Nigerian Equities Market Update: Thursday, 8th February, 2018

Maintaining negative trend, equities trading on the floor of The Nigerian Stock Exchange gave up 49Bpts as it rounded up trade at 43,326.89 from 43,538.16. It was a mixed performance amongst the observed market indices as shown in the index movement table. Week to Date, the lead activities index is down by 294Bpts while total loss suffered in the current month is now 229Bpts. See the index movement table for details.

Value loss by the market capitalization of the listed equities during today’s trading activities was N75.816 billion, same as 49Bpts below the opening value.  Meanwhile, trading activities for the day produced 17 advancers and 26 lagers. NSEASI Year to Date gain is now 13.29% while the Market Capitalization Year to Date gain stood at N1.938 trillion same as 14.24% above the year’s opening value.

During today’s trade, the lagers’ log shrank as against other bearish days within the week, and few buyers came around (buyers strength is 18% while sellers‘ is 82%). This signaled the possibility of the market witnessing few positive days any moment from now. Nevertheless, seeing the market in a new low as against the starting point of the last bullish run (26th January, 2018) is quite uninteresting.

As noted in our various reports, it is expected that investors re-shuffle portfolios in an attempt to position rightly for possible shocks during the next earnings season. Thus, investors are expected to be cautious and more sensitive; all market news and fundamentals should not only be well analyzed, but general reactions to such should also be confirmed through technical analysis tools.

Investments should therefore be based on the possibility of equities releasing improve figures and payment of cash or scrip dividend. Please understand that the possibilities of low dividend yields are on the high side, especially now that most equities are trading above their respective book values. Safe Trade.
