Nigerian Equities Market Records First Loss Since Earnings Season Commences

Starting up the new week, equities trading on the floor of The Nigerian Stock Exchange recorded the first red day since earnings season commenced, as the lead performance pointer, NSEASI gave up 6Bpts of its trading points and closed at 25,027.61 from 25,041.89. It was a mixed performance amongst the observed market indices in this report. Thus, Week to Date, activities index is 6Bpts below the opening while the total gained points in the month of August is now 135Bpts. See the index movement table for details.

Although the lead index ended in the red, the general market mood is still positive, and market excitement is mainly due to mixed performance from posted by various listed equities especially those with December year end. Recall that we consistently informed our readers that, the half year earnings season will determine the general market trend in the month of August, this had been the situation in the past trading days. Please note that more financials are expected from few listed equities with interim dividend policy; such as, Guaranty Trust, Access Bank, UBA, Zenith and Stanbic IBTC. We strictly recommend a careful tread around the market arena.

The total value lost by the Market Capitalization of the listed equities during today’s trading activities was N7.451 billion, same as 6Bpts below the opening value. Meanwhile, trading activities for the day produced 18 ADVANCERS and 11 LAGERS. NSEASI Year to Date loss is now 676Bpts while the Market Capitalization Year to Date gain stood at N97.501 billion same as 75Bpts above the year’s opening value.

Leading on the gainers’ log is Cornerstone Insurance with 9.09% gain that closed its price at N0.60 from N0.55. Unilever followed in the log with 7.14% gain, thus it rounded up trade at N12.00 from N11.20. UCAP,Guinness and Sunu Assurance completed the top 5 price percentage gainers’ log with 6.93%, 6.38% and 5.00% respectively.

On the flip side, Champion Breweries led with 9.47% loss, thus it rounded up trade at N0.86 from N0.95. Honuflour followed with 8.57% to close at N0.96 from N1.05. UACN, MBenefit and ETI completed the top 5 price percentage losers’ log with 4.84%, 4.76% and 4.71% respectively.

Over the Counter Market Index and Capitalisation both on a flat note, thus they closed at point 706.07 and N518.65 billion respectively. Today’s performance produced zero advancer and zero decliner. Kindly view today’s price list Here.

As at the time this report was gathered, Brent Crude sells at 44.96$/bbl, this is 126Bpts above the previous close price.

The I&E FX Window opened at N386.17 traded as high as N386.00 before rounding up at N385.50, having transacted a total of $3.97million through the day. In the money market, the Overnight (O/N) rate closed at 6.13%, same as 1.04% below the previous closing position.
